MetroCentre Maths

Year 4/5 were invited to take part in a fun maths day at the MetroCentre, Gateshead.

We were all given a maths worksheet to complete. The worksheet had questions that we could only answer by walking around the shops and finding the answers.

We had to work out the area of the glass around this lift outside Waterstones.

We had to count how many fish were in this mural outside Debenhams. We also had to see how many words we could make using the letters in DEBENHAMS. Jonathon found a seven letter word: Bensham.

We also met a Maths Wizard who showed us some magic maths tricks!

Then we were asked to work out the total cost of the stamps on these letters. They were stuck to the floor in the Village.

Careers Day 2008

Our future careers are very important and we were very grateful to be able to talk to some more professionals about what we could do when we leave school.

Engineers from BT showed the children in years 4, 5 and 6 how they keep the cables and connections for our telephone lines open. They also make sure our internet connections are working properly.

Scientists from Proctor & Gamble also came to show us how science can be lots of fun. They showed us how to make silly putty using glue, water and a special secret ingredient! It was really messy!

We also met some Dentists from the Dental Hospital at Newcastle University. They taught us about dental hygiene and they let us make our own cast of a tooth using plaster of paris.

Amazing Anglo-Saxons!

Year 3 visited Bede's World in Jarrow to find out more about Anglo-Saxons and how they used to live.

Anglo-Saxons lived approximately 1600 years ago. We wanted to find out more so we went to see Jane at Bede's World. She took us into the old Monastery and let us dress up as Monks. Monks were very clever and would have been able to read and write. They also made books and went to church 8 times a day.
The children in this picture are showing how the Monks wore Habits. The hoods stopped them getting distracted by the people beside them.

We also went to the farm at Bede's World. This is the Farmers' House where he would have lived with all his family.

The Anglo-Saxons did not have Televisions or Radios like we have. At night time they would sit around a roaring fire and tell stories.

They kept lots of animals on the farm for their meat, eggs and skin. We saw Bulls, Sheep, Wild Boars, Geese and Chickens.

Two of the children in our class dressed up like a Farmer and his Wife. They called themselves Oswald and Ethelber! Do their clothes look like the ones we wear?

We had a wonderful day and learned lots about the Anglo-Saxons.
