For half a term we worked with Miss Johnson from Heworth Grange School. She was very kind and we loved having her company. With Miss Johnson we played the drums, played rhythms on metal tubes and played shakers. We really enjoyed it! We learned how to play and write different musical rhythms such as 'tea - coffee - tea' and 'Coca-cola Coca-cola'. On the last week we did a performance for the whole school using different rhythms and instruments. It was great fun!

We visited the Hatton Gallery in Newcastle where we took part in the 'Big Draw'. With the help from Louise from the gallery, we looked at the work of the artists and thought about how each piece of work was created. We didn't know that there were so many different ways of putting marks on paper!

As part of our international studies we looked at China. Lip Yi came into our class and talked with us about the many traditions linked with Chinese New Year. We also tried some traditional Chinese art, Origami, the Chinese art of paper folding and Yian Zhi, the Chinese art of paper cutting. Our wonderful cooks made us a lovely Chinese meal at lunch time. It was very tasty!

We really enjoyed making our very own moving vehicles in technology. We had to evaluate and improve our designs so that the vehicles worked the best that they could. The trickiest part was getting the motor to turn the axles correctly to make the vehicles move. We found out that sometimes too much power doesn't work very well at all.

Early Years Foundation Stage

Outdoor learning is an important part of the Early Years Foundation Stage, whether it is growing and measuring plants, making, finding out or investigating patterns, we love learning out of the classroom. Sometimes our learning takes us to different places like the beach, the woods or the farm. We love learning inside too and enjoy finding things out for ourselves.

Football Club

One of the many after school clubs we run at Brandling is the football club. It is open to any child in Key Stage 2 and is well attended every Thursday. There are lots of chances to develop your footballing skills, play games and have fun. If you have the right attitude and want to play a competitive match you might be lucky to be picked to play for the school team. In 2011 the team finished as runners up in their league!

As part of our topic work we were learning about children in the 19th Century who worked down the mine. Next year, we will be commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Felling Pit disaster when 94 people were killed, many of them children. We did lots of role-play about family life and learned about all the different jobs that people did. We made sketches of the jobs using charcoal.

As part of our international learning we found out all about Italy. We decided to visit an Italian restaurant, 'The Godfather', in Newcastle. Fun was had by all and we really enjoyed the tasty pizzas and pasta. We shared our learning with the rest of the school, our friends and families. We acted out our own restaurant where we ordered our food in Italian with the Italian speaking waiters!

KS1 Fit Club

If you are in Key Stage 1 you might like to join the Fit Club. We do lots of different activities inside and out. We play with balls, bean bags, hoops and juggling scarves. We work on our own, with a partner or in a team. Whatever we do we always have lots of fun and we get fit doing it.

Forest School

As a Forest School we recognise how much the outdoors has to offer towards the development of the whole child. We visited Brockwell Woods in Blaydon to get our first real independent forest learning experience. The children had a fantastic time helping to keep the fire going by collecting and sorting wood, preparing and cooking the lovely stew and pizzas for lunch, building shelters, playing games and generally finding out about the woods and being outdoors. Everyone had a brilliant experience and cannot wait until they go out into the woods again.

Chestnut Class have been learning about Fruitilicious Veggies this term. They went to Brockbushes Farm in Corbridge to pick their own fruit!

]]> Ian from the farm showed us around. We picked blackcurrants and redcurrants:

They were very tasty!

We also picked our favourite fruit of the day: strawberries...mmmm!

Later we picked gooseberries and raspberries. We ate more than we put into our punnets!

We had a fantastic day and took our fruit home to share with our families!

School we be open on Monday 6th December for children from 9:30am to 3:15pm.
There will be no after school clubs until further notice.

We are looking for volunteers to help make the site safe, so if you would like to help clear paths, the entrance and car park, please bring along your own shovels between 8-9am on Monday.

Firstly a big thank you for all your support during the snowy weather conditions.

It was with regret that the school closed on Monday and Tuesday but we are pleased to have been able to open our doors to children today.

We aim to open between 10:00am and 2:00pm on Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd December.
This may of course change and we urge you to check this website regularly and the Gateshead Council website for updates.
